AUGUSTA – Speaker of the House Sara Gideon and Rep. Drew Gattine (D- Westbrook), House Chair of the Appropriations and Financial Affairs Committee, sent a letter to Seema Verma, Administrator of the Centers for Medicaid Services (CMS), outlining the many actions of the Maine Legislature regarding the funding and implementation of Medicaid Expansion.
Excerpt:“Maine does have ample funds to meet its legal obligations to expand MaineCare to over 70,000 Mainers who need healthcare and who are entitled to receive it under the law. Maine’s legislature did make funds available to the LePage Administration specifically for the purpose of funding the cost of expansion. At every juncture the LePage Administration has refused to cooperate with legislative efforts to support the implementation and funding of legally-mandated expansion, culminating with the governor’s veto of a bill that the legislature put on his desk providing the funding he estimates he needs. Even so, there is no legal or factual obstacle to the State’s full participation in the cost of expansion, and thus no reason to delay or reject the filed SPA.”
Gideon and Gattine also encouraged CMS to immediately approve the state plan amendment and countered many of the claims made by Governor Paul LePage in his previous letter to Secretary Alex Azar and Administrator Verma.
