Issues Letter to Maine’s Federal Delegation

Speaker of the House Sara Gideon issued a formal letter urging the members of Maine’s federal delegation to support the DREAM Act ( S.1615 and H.R. 3440). The DREAM Act would address the difficulty faced by undocumented youth living in the United States by allowing recipients to gain conditional legal status and to pursue their educational and employment goals, without threat of deportation. Representative Pingree has already signed on as a cosponsor of H.R. 3440.

Gideon DREAM Letter to Maine’s Federal Delegation

Dear Senators and Representatives,
It is in my professional capacity as the Speaker of the Maine House of Representatives that I write this letter urging you to support The DREAM Act of 2017 (S.1615 and H.R. 3440). However, it is as the daughter of an immigrant that I encourage you to think deeply about the young women and men who would be impacted by this legislation. These young people contribute to our economy, serve in our armed forces, learn in our universities, and are leaders in our communities.
The DREAM Act of 2017 would address the difficulty faced by undocumented youth living in the United States, many of whom were brought here at a young age and consider America their only home. It would allow them to gain conditional legal status and to pursue their educational and employment goals without threat of deportation.
As you are aware, on September 5th of 2017 the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) Program was rescinded by the Trump Administration. Without the action of Congress, these students and graduates, who contribute to our country, our military, and economy, will face an uncertain future.
It is in the best interest for both Maine and our entire country to implement policies that will ensure that all our children have the ability to achieve their full potential. Support of this legislation would provide immigrant students who have grown up here with the opportunity to achieve the American dream and give back to the country they already call home.
Thank you for your leadership regarding this legislation and thank you Congresswoman Pingree for your co-sponsorship of the House bill. I look forward to working with you improve the wellbeing of children and families and our beloved state of Maine.
Sincerely,
Sara Gideon
Speaker of the Maine House of Representatives
