Speaker Gideon Recognizes International Women’s Day,
Affirms Support for Planned Parenthood
AUGUSTA – On International Women’s Day, Speaker of the Maine House Sara Gideon released the following statement:
“Today, on International Women’s Day, we reaffirm our commitment to creating better outcomes for women. As we celebrate the victories that women have won, we must keep moving forward. Through my service in the legislature, I am committed to advancing opportunity for all women and working families in Maine by improving their economic security and economic prosperity.
“Planned Parenthood creates those better outcomes today and every day. The current federal Republican proposal would will leave thousands of vulnerable Mainers without access to basic health care. For many women in Maine, Planned Parenthood is their only accessible medical provider. In fact, 1 in 5 Maine women have relied on on a Planned Parenthood health center for their primary and preventive health care. More than half of the women, men, and families Planned Parenthood serves every year in Maine live below the poverty line. Without these services, many would have nowhere to turn for affordable, comprehensive care.
“On International Women’s Day, and every day, I stand with Planned Parenthood and will fight to uphold their mission of delivering quality healthcare to any Mainer that needs it. “
